I'm taking part in the Walk in Her Name Step Challenge in memory of my mum Elaine
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page. 8 Years ago my life changed when our beautiful mum was diagnosed with a rare form of Ovarian Cancer. Just 6 months later mum passed away peacefully at home after losing her battle with this horrible disease.
They call it the "silent killer" this is because it has very few symptoms until the disease has taken hold. The first symptoms that mum experienced was bloating, she looked like she was 6 months pregnant, but after visiting the Doctor was told it was IBS. However mum knew her own body and was not convinced so went back for a second opinion, this time she was seen by a female doctor who immediately sent mum off for a blood test to test for levels of CA125 which can be an indicator of the disease, with mum's results showing a high level of CA125 in her blood.
The bloating and looking pregnant was caused by Ascites buildup in the Abdomen, other symptoms mum experienced was feeling tired and the need to go to the toilet more frequently, which are easily diagnosed as IBS symptoms.
Since mum passed away in 2013 I have become passionate about raising awareness of this disease and raising funds for further research. Did you know that every year, 295,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer globally. Approximately half of these women will not survive beyond five years. March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and I’m taking 295,000 steps throughout the month to raise funds for life-saving research that will help these women, and the next generation, survive.
Please help me take 295,000 steps, raise £295 and move research forward. #stepforeverywoman
